Caravanning In Snowdonia For A Great Holiday

When deciding upon a holiday destination in the British Isles, the common locations come to mind – London for the nightlife, theatre and museums and galleries, the North and Northwest of England, such as Cumbria and Yorkshire for their lakes, winding valleys and rolling dales and Devon and Cornwall for a for beach resorts. There is a strongly rooted heritage in Scotland with its heather strewn hills, castles, whisky and its recognizable national dishes such as smoked salmon and haggis!

However, why not try out Wales. Its is more than just unpredictable weather and laver bread delicacies (otherwise known as seaweed). There is a incredible quantity of wide ranging country, busy metropolises such as Swansea and Cardiff and beaches at Cardigan Bay, Tenby and the Gower Peninsula. Of all of the counties in Wales, Snowdonia and the North has some of the most striking scenery. If your choice is self-catering there are a range of accommodations from cottages and farmhouses, and many a riverside caravan park in the Snowdonia National Park.

A pretty rural village is Betws-y-Coed in the Conwy valley in north-west Wales. its is in in a valley near the place where the Rivers Lledr and Llugwy join the River Conwy. There is a museum at the railway station with a shop, restaurant and miniature railway. The historic 14th century St. Michael’s church is amongst the oldest in Wales and a worthy site to see.

Of outstanding interest are the numerous bridges in the area. Pont-y-Pair (the bridge of the cauldron), built in 1468, is buffeted by foaming water after heavy rain. Numerous sign-posted walks to the neighbouring countryside commence near the bridge. Little more than a mile away is the Miner’s Bridge, on the road leading to Capel Curig, where the miners crossed over the river to the mine on a steep ladder.

Built in 1815, Thomas Telford’s iron Waterloo Bridge carries the A5 main road over the River Conwy, bears the following inscription “This arch was constructed in the same year the battle of Waterloo was fought”. An additional place to visit are the awesome Conwy Falls leading from the road to Pentrefoelas and the beautiful Fairy Glen off the A470 road where the River Conwy streams through a small canyon.

An early spring break when blooms of daffodils are plentiful, with the blue sky and clouds above whilst hiking in Snowdonia are splendid times to clear out the blues of winter and whet the taste for traditional dishes such as grilled trout, roast lamb and mid-afternoon tea must contain that Welsh specialty Bara Brith which is a spicy, fruity teabread. Don’t forget that there is plenty of seafood in the Anglesey waters for example mussels, scallops and seabass.
